School Ministry (SADD)

Community Awareness & Victim Support

"Life is a series of choices...
every choice you make makes you"

What we do

'SADD' - (Students Against Destructive Decisions) was founded on the simple philosophy that young people, empowered to help each other, are the most effective force in prevention. It empowers and mobilizes students and adult allies to engage in positive change through leadership and smart decision-making. This mission is accomplished by creating, equipping, and sustaining a network of student-run chapters in schools and communities focused on peer-to-peer education. It fosters a sense of belonging and promotes resiliency, leadership, and advocacy skills so that young people make positive life decisions that will carry them throughout life. The School Outreach Ministry of the Laminin Foundation seeks to play a role in achieving the goal of Supporting youth-led drug use prevention and mental health initiatives in school and community settings in OAS member states. The Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) has been in partnership with SADD since 2021 though the only participating countries in our region to date are Suriname and the Bahamas. With participation now open to all OAS English-speaking Member States as revealed at a seminar hosted by NADAPP in June 2024, SADD is now poised to be launched in schools and/or communities in Trinidad and Tobago.

What we do

Casa de Corazon Children's Home, formerly called the Heart Home, was established in 1991 by Pastor Clive Dottin, then Youth Director of the South Caribbean Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. Ps. Dottin was supported by Mildred Jones and later, Ms. Angela Joseph of ‘Friends Forever’ in getting the initiative up and running as a response to children who were victims of abuse and abandonment and in need of a safe space. The Laminin Foundation seeks to recruit and empower a cadre of committed volunteers to support this institution in enhancing the lives of the children residents. Members and volunteers alike can donate finances as well as food items such as groceries, vegetables, juices, and fruits to support the needs of the children. On occasions, Laminin may also sponsor prepared meals when resources are available.

Volunteers

Volunteers in this ministry will be required to register with SADD as an advisor (must be 18 years of age or older) and select Laminin Foundation as their organization. They may commit 1-2 hours weekly or as often as the regular chapter meetings are held. Additional time may be needed for special events that are held termly or annually. There are two main types of chapters to be established in schools and communities: Alcohol, Tobacco, and Drugs SADD chapters: have access to an array of information, tools, and prevention programs to engage, educate, and empower the school, community, and parents. Personal Health and Safety: (emotional abuse and violence prevention; mental health and wellness; suicide and self-harm; depression and anxiety) SADD chapters have access to experts, information, tools and campaigns that address a growing range of issues teens are struggling with today. Training for volunteers in this ministry is provided both through the SADD website via advisor access, and directly by the Laminin Foundation on a range of relevant topics.

Volunteers

Volunteer roles in this ministry varies and in partnership with the institution can include periodic visits (conducting spiritual and fun activities with the children), tutoring (assisting with specific subject areas), mentoring (volunteers provide advice to children interested in their profession), and adoption (Volunteers may assist with education expenses such as textbooks, uniform etc. or simply remembering their assigned child’s birthday and sponsoring a gift) Volunteer time commitment in this ministry ranges from 4-8 hours per month.
